Turning lights off can literally save lives!

Every year billions of birds migrate in the spring and fall, the majority of them flying at night. This is a risky undertaking - it is estimated that millions of birds die while migrating.  As they pass over big cities, they become disoriented by artificial lighting and skyglow, the bright lights overriding their internal compass and natural navigational cues. Vital energy reserves are lost as birds fly around in confusion, colliding with windows and buildings or collapsing exhausted, leaving them vulnerable to other threats.

Lights Out Nashville participants pledge to take bird-friendly steps during spring and fall migration between dusk and dawn when buildings are not in use to create safe passage for migrating birds.
